THOUSANDS of people have signed up to donate their organs after a Knebworth woman shared her desperate need for a transplant.

Not only did Kathryn Graham, 51, tell WHT about her terminal disease, she also shared it with the nation as part of ITV’s From the Heart campaign. In that week alone, 147,000 people signed up to the register, offering Kathryn hope that she will receive a new set of lungs and a heart in time. She said: “I had no idea really how people would respond to it.

“But I have been really delighted and I was on cloud nine all week as the numbers kept going up.”

Kath, of Stevenage Road, Knebworth, was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension around two-and-half years ago and was moved on to the transplant list within months because her condition was so bad.

People are only put on the list when it is feared they have less than two years to live – so far the ex-teacher has been waiting more than 500 days.

She said: “I think the biggest thing that has come out of this is that families are now talking about it.

“Even if they don’t want to donate at least the discussion is there and it makes me feel less isolated.”
