A Welwyn Garden City man has been given a community order after stealing three charity collection boxes.

Joseph Hoy, 26, of Mendlesham, admitted stealing charity boxes from the Co-op and Boots in WGC on April 7.

He also admitted stealing a charity box from Spring House Medical Centre in Ascots Lane, WGC, on April 22 after trespassing.

St Albans Magistrates’ Court also heard how Hoy had stolen £21 worth of groceries from the Co-op on February 24, an offence he admitted when he appeared in court on April 30.

Hoy also admitted fraud by using a bank card belonging to someone else, intending to make a gain of £22.78 for himself on March 10.

The defendant was given a community order.

He must have treatment for drug dependency for six months.

He is banned from entering the Co-op in Hall Grove or Boots in Cole Green Lane for a year.

Hoy must participate in an activity as required by the responsible officer for up to 20 days.

He was ordered to pay £100 court costs, plus compensation of £91.
