Welwyn Hatfield has suffered a sharp spike in unemployment benefit claims, the first rise in nearly a year.
The National Office of Statistics revealed today that 975 people in the borough claimed Jobseekers’ Allowance in January, up from 883 in December.
Although the total is down 28 per cent year-on-year, this is the first rise in Welwyn Hatfield since the February 2014 total was published in March.
In neighbouring Hertsmere, last month’s total is up just 14 in the month to 832, down 29 per cent year-on-year.
The claimant count has increased every January in both boroughs since 2012, suggesting seasonal factors, rather than economic, may be behind the latest rise.
