Jobs are at risk at a Hatfield-based pharmaceutical firm, it has been announced.

Around 20 posts are expected to go at Eisai’s UK headquarters in Mosquito Way – with a further 30 contractors being told their contracts will not be renewed.

Staff were told the bad news on Wednesday last week.

A company spokeswoman told the Welwyn Hatfield Times the move, which affects staff in the research and development section, is due to a global restructure.

She said: “That part of the business is being restructured globally, and jobs are at risk.

“We will support the employees whose jobs are being put at risk by this reorganisation.”

She said the job losses would account for “around 10 per cent” of the department.

A staff consultation will last until the end of November.

A planned £8 million expansion of the Japanese firm’s packaging plant on the Hatfield Business Park site will not be affected by the restructure, it has said.
