A Welwyn Garden City man has faced court after tailgating an unmarked police car and undertaking it on a roundabout before speeding off at up to 100mph.

James Hitch, 43, appeared at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on April 12.

He admitted driving without reasonable consideration for other people using the road on September 4.

Hitch had been driving an Audi S3 on the A414 North Orbital Road when he started following an unmarked police too closely from St Albans towards Hatfield.

The court heard how the defendant then pulled out alongside the police vehicle and undertook it at a roundabout, cutting in front, before undertaking another vehicle and accelerating up to 100mph.

Hitch, of Mendlesham, was fined £547.

He was ordered to pay victim services £54 and £85 court costs.

Five penalty points were issued.
