A MOTORWAY service station has scooped an award for the best toilets.
The Welcome Break site at South Mimms won the the 2007 Loo of the Year Awards in its sector, for the quality and standards of its toilets.
The award is aimed at highlighting the standards of 'away from home' toilet provision all over the UK.
Authorised inspectors made unannounced visits to numerous motorway service area toilets over a three-month period.
The toilets were bogged down with different inspection criteria they had to meet, including décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hygiene equipment and overall management.
South Mimms site director Jonathan Elliott said he was flushed with excitement at winning the award.
"We are delighted with the award and the recognition of providing the best toilets on the UK motorway network," he said.
"Our staff ensure that the toilets are in first-class condition at all times and it is great that their efforts have been rewarded."
Awards director Richard Chisnell said: "South Mimms is a worthy winner of the motorway service areas award.
"Our inspectors reported that the ladies and gents toilets were clean and provided excellent facilities."
# The Howard Centre in WGC was also on the honours list for best loos.
It received a maximum five stars for the standard of the toilets at the shopping complex.
Shirley Harper, marketing manager at the Howard Centre, said: "We are delighted that we've been awarded five stars.
"Previously we had been given four stars, but I think the fact that we have redecorated and made them cleaner gave us that extra star. So we are very pleased.
