A CHARITY has launched a new initiative to help older people with depression, early dementia, memory loss and loneliness to retain their independence.

More than 40 people attended the first Healthwise event at Douglas Tilbe House at Hall Grove in WGC, organised by Age UK Hertfordshire.

The 10-week programme includes healthy eating, gentle exercise, digital inclusion and social interaction.

Healthwise helps to ensure that older people can continue to remain independent and to enjoy a healthy and happy life for as long as possible.

The new scheme has been made possible by funding from the Big Lottery Fund, Hertfordshire County Council and NHS Hertfordshire.

Age UK’s chief executive Marion Birch said: “Promoting good mental health and wellbeing in later life benefits the whole of society by maintaining older people’s social and economic contributions, minimising the cost of care and improving later life.”
