A CONTROVERSIAL incinerator in Hatfield has been described as a "dark Satanic mill" as politicians brace for a crunch decision.
The comment was made by Councillor Steve Markiewicz, who branded the plant “dated technology”.
He said: “I suggest this isn’t in line with the Hertfordshire ethos. We’re a dynamic, forward thinking county.”
Also critical was Councillor Malcolm Cowan, who described the application as a “nonsense”, and said: “We’ve got to stop digging the hole we’ve got ourselves into.”
He warned that the development was likely to be called in by the government, and said: “It will be torn to shreds.”
But Councillor Ray Shakespeare-Smith said: “When we stand for election we take on a responsibility for the county as a whole.
“This isn’t just a decision for Hatfield, it’s a decision for the whole of the Hertfordshire.”
And he continued: “We in Hertfordshire have to clean up our own mess, wherever it goes a substantial number of people will complain.”
The debate continues.
It is expected a vote will be held today.
