About 300 people heard hospital chiefs give their annual assessment of hospital performance in Hatfield yesterday.

The trust governing Stevenage’s Lister and Welwyn Garden City’s QEII hospitals held its public review of 2016/17 at the University of Hertfordshire’s Weston Auditorium.

Chief executive Nick Carver said afterwards: “Consultant urological surgeon Nikhil Vasdev gave a fascinating talk demonstrating how he and his colleagues have built one of the best robotic surgery services in the country, with a growing global reputation. Following Nikhil came a video of a patient called Phillip Fielding, which included his family and the team at the Lister who cared for him when he contracted septicaemia.

“Phillip survived against the odds and his account of the great care he received is helping to raise awareness about beating sepsis.”
