Two heroes who gave lifesaving CPR have been recognised with a cash award from the Howard Centre.
When one of their colleagues suffered a massive heart attack at work, Michael Bryan and Mick Jones didn’t hesitate to rush to help.
It is for this bravery that the Howard Centre presented the two men with a cheque for £100 to spend in the Welwyn Garden City shopping centre.
The two men, who work for JJ Burgess & Sons funeral services in Welwyn Garden City, administered CPR to their colleague in August last year, saving his life.
The man, who is in his thirties, was found slumped over in his car.
Michael said: “One of the guys that work here came running into the reception and shouted for help and we went running out to the car park.”
It was fortunate that both Michael, from Baldock, and his colleague Mick, from Hemel Hempstead, were trained to administer CPR.
Funeral operator Michael dragged the man out of the car and Mick, who is a stonemason, began chest compressions.
Paramedics then arrived and applied a defibrillator.
The man is still recovering, but he would not be alive without Mick and Michael’s quick thinking and lifesaving skills.
“He’s a mate, but you’d do it for anybody,” said Michael.
“I’m just glad he’s still here.”
He urges everybody to learn CPR. “Get it done,” he said. “You never know when you’ll need it.”
There are still three further chances to nominate for the monthly cash award, which are a partnership with the WHT Community Awards.
Howard Centre Manager Paul Haynes said: “Although shopping centres are commercial venues, they also play a valuable role in working with local groups and charities.”
The four winners will be automatically entered into the final Community Hero category at the WHT Community Awards alongside the other categories in June.
