ACROSS the UK, a number of local authorities including Lancashire County Council and Barnet Council have been criticised after refusing to fly the flag of St George during the football World Cup.
However, Hertsmere Borough Council emphatically does not fall into that category.
For on Thursday, the authority hoisted the England ensign outside its Borehamwood offices, following in the footsteps of PM David Cameron who pledged to fly the flag over Downing Street for the duration of the tournament.
The council’s chief executive, Donald Graham, said: “Here in Hertsmere, with Arsenal’s training ground on our doorstep, we are particularly supportive of the team and wish them all the best in the tournament.
“Big sporting occasions can bring communities together and give people an opportunity to take pride in our nation.”
