WHEN it comes to clean streets, ours are up there with the cleanest.

WHEN IT comes to clean streets - ours are up there with the cleanest.

That is the finding of a report run by the 2010/11 Clean Britain Awards which awarded Hertsmere four out of five stars for cleanliness and paid particular praise to Potters Bar.

The assessments made through anonymous inspections covered criteria such as general litter, chewing gum, fly tipping, graffiti and the provision of litter bins.

Cllr Jean Heywood, portfolio holder for the environment, said: “This is great news. We spend a lot of time cleaning our public areas and trying to ensure they are well-maintained and recognition like this does help with civic pride. We can all play our part in helping to keep our towns clean and thanks go to the public for continuing to use our litter bins to help us achieve this.”

Areas under inspection in Potters Bar included Darkes Lane and the train station as well as the High Street. The summary commented: “Hertsmere is a busy district with a number of busy commercial areas and it is clear that the cleaning regimes being implemented by the council are clearly working.

“Potters Bar scored relatively well with the areas visited being kept generally very well and to a high standard.”
