Hertfordshire Sports Village in Hatfield has reopened following the discovery of legionella bacteria at the site.

The University of Hertfordshire’s sports complex, which is also open to the public, was closed yesterday as a “precaution” after the bacteria was found during a routine test.

The bacteria can cause legionnaires’ disease and often flourishes in air conditioning and central heating systems.

A spokesman said: “Routine tests indicated the presence of the lowest risk strain of the legionella bacteria, which is commonly found in water facilities.

“We took immediate precautionary action in closing an area of the Sports Village and have tested the limited number of affected areas.

“The health and safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority and we can reassure all of our customers that no one using the facilities has been put at risk in any way.”

The complex has now reopened, but the showering facilities will be unavailable until tomorrow afternoon.
