THE police forces covering Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire have agreed to merge three more units.

The dog sections, professional standards departments and scientific services will be combined and cover both counties from April.

The move will save more than 1m a year, which will be re-invested into frontline policing.

Herts and Beds already share a major crime unit, which was launched in autumn 2007.

A proposal to set up a joint firearms support unit has also been given the go-ahead by the two police authorities. That could be set up in July.
