A hungry heron has been caught on camera gobbling up some kind of rodent at Stanborough Lakes in Welwyn Garden City.
Hobbyist photographer Colin Le Boutillier was enjoying a walk when he spotted the long-legged freshwater bird.
Colin told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “A pleasant stroll round Stanborough Lakes suddenly got exciting, or gruesome depending on your taste, when this heron took an early lunch.”
Welwyn Garden City resident Colin, 69, said he watched as the heron landed in the sailing area of Stanborough Lakes, caught the rodent and flew to a quieter area to enjoy its afternoon snack.
Hobbyist photographer Colin, who is retired, captured the spectacle with his Nikon Coolpix P1000, the specifications being Zoom 432mm, /500 sec f7.1.
A large number of herons are thought to be nesting at Stanborough Lakes and the opportunistic birds won’t usually pass up an easy meal.
Colin said: “I saw a heron get a duck once.”
