A ROBBER who stole thousands of pounds from a bank was almost thwarted by workers at a shop.

Paul Channing and Yvonne Nash, who both work at Martin's on Woodhall Parade, were both outside the front of the newsagents when the raid at Barclays happened.

Mr Channing, the manager, told the WHT how they were literally inches away from stopping the robber, at about noon on Tuesday last week.

"We were standing outside the front when we heard a noise come from the bank.

"We saw the door smash and then the man, running outside with a bag of money in his hand."

The robber had grabbed the bag and fled out of the bank and into an alleyway which leads to the rear of the shops.

"He was shouting in a foreign language at us and as he went to run past Yvonne, she tried to trip him up, but just missed.

"He stumbled and then I tried to grab him, but just missed. He then ran off down the alleyway."

The 22-year-old added: "Looking back now, I wish I had chased him, but at the time it all happened very quickly.

"The security guard seemed a bit shocked, too. It didn't seem as if he had long enough to react."

Yvonne, 42, said: "It's shocking to think something like this happened right on our doorstep.

"I wish I had got him, I almost did!"

No-one from Barclays was available for comment.
