A Hatfield resident from the Harpsfield Hall Veteran Breakfast Club reveals what it's really like being at war on the front line.

As a vehicle mechanic of the Territorial Army, David Collins of Briars Wood, witnessed the action in the second Iraq war on the front line in 2003.

The 47-year-old said: “My job was to repair the front line vehicles. You’re getting shot at, but it’s a case of you’ve got to do your job and you just carry on.

“My job regardless is to get that vehicle working and you risk your own life to do it.”

He added: “The only way to describe it is if you imagine an epic firework display. It’s lit up because of the bombs and people firing up into the sky.

“It was scary but all I can say is I’m glad I did it.”
