Hatfield’s most controversial councillor, Labour defector Mike Alder, has been found dead.

Councillor Alder, whose defection from Labour in July gave control of Hatfield Town Council to the Conservatives, was found dead by police at his home in Northfields at about 2.30pm yesterday.

He was identified by deputy town clerk Paul Widdecombe, who has known him since 2008.

Councillor Alder’s death gives Labour a majority on the authority, with seven elected members to six Tories, and one independent.

Mr Widdecombe said the timing of a by-election was the responsibility of the borough council.
