A swimmer has told how he had to evacuate Hatfield swimming pool and stand outside with bare feet and a foil blanket.
Emergency services were on the scene yesterday after a fire at Hatfield Swim Centre at 5.25pm.
Hatfield Fire Station reported that it was a small fire outside the building, under the exit by the staircase.
A Hatfield firefighter told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “As the fire was near to the vents for the air conditioning the smoke travelled into the building.
“We attended with four pumps and 18 to 25 firefighters, just to be cautious.”
It is not known how the fire started.
A regular swimmer at the centre, Peter Beck of Woolmer Green, said: “I was enjoying doing lengths in the pool when the fire alarm went off.
“The staff insisted that we went out side and gave out foil blankets. Not much fun going outside in the cold and in bare feet.
“Everyone evacuated the swimming centre in a quiet, orderly fashion with lots of staff in attendance.”
