A FIRE scare forced the evacuation of a major shopping centre yesterday (Wednesday).

Two fire engines and police were called to Hatfield’s Galleria at 7.40pm to reports of smoke issuing from a lift shaft.

Firefighters returned to their stations at just after 8.05pm.

A Galleria spokesman said: “We would like to confirm that, although the fire brigade were called to the centre last night at 7.40pm, no fire was discovered.

“The automatic fire evacuation was triggered by smoke in one of our lifts as a result of a burnt out drive belt.

“Everyone was evacuated safely and the fire brigade had left by 8.05pm. We would like to assure our customers that we are open for business as usual.”
