A man has been sentenced for stealing lead from roofs in Hatfield.

Damon Whitcombe, 32, of Chelwood Avenue, Hatfield, appeared at Hatfield Magistrates’ Court on July 21 and pleaded guilty to stealing lead from St Michael’s and All Angels Church, in Birchwood Avenue, on April 29.

Whitcombe also pleaded guilty to stealing a wing mirror from a BMW in Homestead Road between May 14 and May 15.

He asked for three further offences to be taken into consideration by the court:

* The theft of lead from a block of flats in Mosquito Way between February 27 and March 5.

* The theft of lead from Aragon House in The Common, Hatfield, between May 16 and 17.

* The theft of lead from St Michael’s and All Angels Church between May 1 and 6.

Officers were able to identify Whitcombe as responsible for the theft at the church after the lead was recovered from a local scrap dealer.

On Tuesday Whitcombe was sentenced to a 12-month community order, with an eight-week curfew.

He was ordered to pay compensation totalling £625 and pay £180 court charges.
