A Hatfield man was sentenced for stealing lottery scratch cards belonging to a local store he worked in.

Michael Patel, 39, of Lavender Close, stole the cards from Garden Village Stores, in Manor Parade, between January 11 and February 22.

He scanned the bar codes on the scratch cards to see if they were winning tickets and then claimed cash prizes from the till in the shop.

Patel was given eight months’ prison suspended for two years, 200 hours’ unpaid work, and has to pay £2,546.79 compensation and a £100 surcharge.
