A MOTORIST from Hatfield was killed after losing control of his car and hitting a tree in the early hours of today (Saturday).
The man, in his early 50s, was driving along the A1000 Great North Road in Brookmans Park, towards Potters Bar, at about 5am.
A police spokeswoman said he lost control of his Mercedes in the icy conditions and smashed into a tree. The car ended up on his roof.
The man, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
At time of writing, the A1000 remains shut between Kentish Lane and Bell Lane. Police are urging drivers to find alternative routes.
Police are appealing for witnesses - in particular the occupants of two vehicles which are believed to have been in the area at the time of the crash
