A HATFIELD man has been charged in connection with a fire which closed the M1 in April this year.

Traffic disruption was caused for days due to the blaze at a scrapyard under an elevated section of the motorway.

The road was shut between junction 1 at Brent Cross, north London, and junction 4 at Elstree, Hertfordshire.

Luke Matthews, 18, of Richmond Court, Hatfield, has been charged with conspiracy to commit three acts of arson including the M1 fire.

He is charged alongside five others: an 18-year-old man, two 17-year-olds and two 15-year-old boys.

They were all charged on Monday, and have been bailed to appear at Hendon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, September 20.
