MORE than £60,000 has been collected by campaigners preparing for a legal battle against the incinerator plans.
The New Barnfield (Action Fund) Trust has collected the money in case the application is passed by the Government.
Labour councillor Kieran Thorpe, who spoke on behalf of the trust at last Wednesday’s decision meeting at County Hall, called the plans “fundamentally, factually flawed” and said it was a “ridiculously mismanaged project”.
After the meeting he told the Welwyn Hatfield Times he was confident the project could be derailed.
He said: “The next stage is to get the decision called-in and we are preparing for a legal battle.
“But I am confident that it will get rejected – once I saw the holes in the application I was confident it would be turned down.
“I still think we will win.”
MP Grant Shapps, who set up the trust in 2009, also backed the call for legal action, saying: “It is not the end of the road.
“We will now try to get it [the plans] called up before the Secretary of State.
“We [the trust] have raised nearly £60,000 for legal fees for a judicial review if it comes to that.”
