QUESTION: What fast food chain has the most stores in the UK?

No, it's not who you think.

Sandwich chain Subway has announced it has overtaken McDonald's as the country's largest fast food chain, and part of that success can be attributed to 32-year-old franchisee Joga Shoker.

The former business student, who graduated from the University of Hertfordshire in 2000, is the proud owner and operator of five Subway outlets - three in Hatfield, one in Borehamwood, and another in Dunstable.

Joga, who now lives in St Albans but previously spent eight years living in Hatfield, said: "I'd looked at buying a franchise before, and Subway just seemed to be a great up-and-coming brand.

"It was a product that appealed to me, and having been a student, I knew it would appeal to the large student population in Hatfield.

"Having been here since 1996, I saw the town grow into a larger student population, and with the business park being built at the old aerospace site, there was going to be a larger working population, so I saw the potential in the town."

Not content with resting on his laurels, Joga is currently in the process of finalising the opening of two more stores, and says a plan for a fourth Hatfield Subway is in the pipeline.

"That's the plan at least," said Joga. "We hope to have a fourth store here by the end of the year."

Joga's first Hatfield store opened in The Common in July 2006, and a second, in Parkhouse Court, followed in November 2007.

He made it a hat-trick of stores in May last year, opening an outlet in The Galleria.

Joga said he felt becoming a franchisee was a "great route" to success.

"You're working with a known name brand that's already got the tracks to run along.

"It's something I've found very successful, I recommend it highly.
