When Demi Farrer was born she weighed just 1lb 13oz – less than a bag of sugar, and small enough to hold in the palm of a hand.

Born three months early to mother Tracy after a stressful pregnancy, she was whisked away into the neonatal unit at the Lister Hospital as she soon as she was out of her mother’s tummy. After three months the tiny tot, who was originally one of twins, was allowed to go home weighing a miniscule 3lb 15oz in January 2012.

For Tracy those first few weeks were the scariest of her and husband Dave’s lives.

The 30-year-old said: “It was scary, she was so, so tiny.

“I didn’t even know that a baby could be born at 28 weeks before I had her.”

Now the couple, who live in Travellers Lane, Hatfield, want to show their gratitude to the doctors and nurses who saved their precious daughter’s life by fundraising for the unit.

Tracy was originally admitted into hospital at 27 weeks into her pregnancy.

She had suffered from pre-eclampsia since week 20, which had caused her blood pressure to soar along with a host of other problems which potentially put her baby twins’ lives in danger.

Three days before Demi was born via emergency c-section, her twin brother tragically passed away after suffering brain damage.

Tracy said: “The way I look at it I could have walked out without any babies, but I walked out with one.”

Her daughter is now 20 months old and “is just like a normal baby”.

On July 12 she will host a fun day at Hatfield Free School and wants to raise £3,000 to give to the unit, which she said she could not praise enough.

Tracy said: “They were fantastic, I was going in every day and the doctors and nurses were terrific.

“They would phone you about everything.

“I cannot fault them.

“They were just fantastic, I don’t know what else to say. If it wasn’t for the unit she would not be here today.”
