APPROVED plans to demolish the former bingo hall in Hatfield and build student flats have been scaled down.

An application to knock down the art deco building in The Common and replace it with a mixed use development comprising 111 student bedrooms within two buildings, plus two retail units, have been approved by Welwyn Hatfield Council.

The plan, by Village Homes, is a scaled down version of a larger proposal which had been approved on appeal last year.

Agent Ian Taylor said: “We personally consider this to be an improvement. The scheme wouldn’t result in overdevelopment of the site.

“It will breathe life back into The Common and retain the character of the local area.”

The former cinema and bingo hall has stood empty since 2007. The new proposal would see the building demolished and replaced by one part three storey/part four storey building, and another three story building.

One building would comprise 72 bedrooms, a gymnasium and communal laundry room, while the other building would have 39 bedrooms.
