A ROBBER wielding a six inch blade and a claw hammer was sent packing by a WGC newsagent manager who refuses to "give in to idiots, punks and yobbos".

The raider targeted Huttons Newsagents, in Marsden Road, Welwyn Garden City, at around 5.30am today (Tuesday) and demanded workers fill his satchel with cigarettes, but manager Richard Edlin had other ideas.

The 55-year-old said: “I just said no, we are not doing it and I said to get out and he did with a bit of persuasion, there was nothing taken and no damage was done. It was a little bit frightening.

“[The knife] was about six or seven inches, it was a kitchen knife and he had a claw hammer in the other hand.

“35 years I have been doing this and this is the first time.

“We don’t give in to idiots, punks and yobbos.”

After the hapless thug was sent packing Mr Edlin “got the papers out as normal” and carried on working.

Police have launched an appeal to try and trace the man and have released CCTV images of the failed raid.

DS Pete Ward, who is investigating the incident, said: “We would like to speak to the man in this photo in connection with our inquiry.

“While it not possible to see the man’s face from these images, it may be that someone recognises the clothing the man is wearing.

“If this is you, or that you believe you may know who it is, then please get in touch with police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information about the incident should contact police on the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
