A planning application has been submitted to turn the former Welwyn Garden City Costcutter and post office premises into a gym.
The Fitness Space UK has applied to Welwyn Hatfield Council for a change of use at 17-19 Howardsgate in Welwyn Garden City.
The proposed gym would employ full and part-time staff.
It would open from 6am – 9pm Monday to Friday, 6am – 8pm on Saturday and 8am – 6.30pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
In a design and access statement on behalf of the company, it is noted: “The proposed gym will enhance the social infrastructure available in the area by providing local employees and residents easy access to this leisure facility either before, after or during a break from work.
“It will also cater for those users wanting to combine trips with other activities such as shopping or eating out.
“Whilst the gym will be open to the wider public, the presence of existing office and retail units within the wider town centre will provide an inherent market and demand for the facilities from those who work there.
“The application site is also within easy walking and cycling distance of the surrounding residential areas, and has good public transport services to areas further afield, minimising a reliance on the use of private cars.”
