Welwyn Hatfield MP rails at Network Rail boss honours

Welwyn Hatfield's MP has spoken out at the surprise CBE for the head of Network Rail.
The Queen’s birthday honours were announced on Saturday June 9, and one particular appointment raised a few eyebrows.
Mark Carne, outgoing chief executive at Network Rail, was appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the railway industry.
Carne has been at the helm throughout the chaos of Govia’s timetable changeover that affected passengers on Great Northern and Thameslink services.
The Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling, recently called Network Rail’s performance during this time “simply unacceptable.”
Welwyn Hatfield’s MP Grant Shapps said: “I do find the timing of this CBE very concerning.
“Hundreds of thousands of commuters are suffering from appalling disruption – including anyone from Welwyn Hatfield who travels into London – and I think the last thing the state should be doing right now is recognising any of the individuals who have been running this show.
“It cannot be right for this Queen’s birthday list to be used to honour the outgoing boss of Network Rail.”
He added that it would be best that honours for any rail bosses should be considered only after the public inquiry into the rail chaos is completed.
