A LOSING councillor blamed national apathy towards Gordon Brown's Government for Labour losing five seats to the Conservatives at last night's count.

Jacqui Russell, was ousted from her seat in the Peartree ward as the Lib Dems stole a march on the main opposition.

A thwarted Mrs Russell said she would not miss debates in the council chamber but claimed being part of the Labour opposition was "great fun".

She said: "I am absolutely very disappointed. I think that we have been swept away by the national view of the Labour party and that has had an effect locally."

Current Lib Dem county councillor Malcolm Cowan and party colleague Louise Lotz were elected with 516 and 470 votes respectively.

Labour deputy leader Steve Roberts retained his seat with 453 votes. Mrs Russell polled 399.
