Engineers hope to finish restoring gas suply to Welham Green today.

National Grid staff, who have been working in the village since the supply started faltering on Sunday evening, reconnected over half the affected homes - about 1,500 - yesterday.

A spokesman said this morning: “Our engineers will be visiting the remaining properties today, so we can hopefully gain access and switch on their gas supplies.

“We’re grateful to the local community for their continued understanding and would like to reassure them that we’re doing all we can to restore gas supplies across the area as soon as possible.

“People are reminded that they should ask to see the official identity cards of callers before letting them into their homes.”
