A RESEARCH centre owned by a pharmaceutical giant was put up for sale this week.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is vacating its site at The Frythe, in Welwyn.

As the Welwyn Hatfield Times reported back in 2008, around 250 workers will be moved to the firm’s existing locations in Ware or Stevenage as plans to downsize continue.

A spokeswoman for GSK, which has been at The Frythe since 1977, said the move was due to other sites being under utilised.

She added: “Reviews have shown The Frythe would require significant investment to create a fit-for-purpose, modern laboratory.”
