CAR park charges are set to rise again for town centre shoppers.

Leading councillors were due to agree to the increase at a meeting last night.

The changes would affect shoppers and town centre workers in WGC.

Currently parkers pay £1 for the first two hours, but from April £1 will only pay for one hour.

Shoppers will then fall into the second band which costs £2 for up to three hours.

A report to Welwyn Hatfield Council's cabinet states: "The change would tend to encourage shoppers who have stayed for over an hour to stay for up to three hours, as it would cost no more.

"On the other hand it may encourage some to stay for less than an hour."

It is also suggested that if the increase goes ahead, councillors could freeze short-term shopping charges until April 2010.

Both the Howard Centre and John Lewis managements expressed objections to the price increases.

# Charges at long stay car parks in Osborn Way and Campus East were increased in April and will remain unchanged.

# In Hatfield none of the car parks have charges (other than the one at Hatfield railways station.

But this is set to change following the multi-million redevelopment of Hatfield Town Centre.
