Gas engineers hope to start restoring supply to Welham Green today, but have warned it could be a long job.

National Grid staff have now visited every affected home - about 1,500 - and turned off the supply, enabling it to be progesssively restored.

A spokesman said: “We hope to start restoring people’s gas supplies on Wednesday, September 14, though this process may take some time due to the large number of properties involved, as each of them must be visited.

“People are reminded that they should ask to see the official identity cards of callers before letting them into their homes.

“We’re working closely with the local authority and housing association to identify and make provision for vulnerable customers and we’ll continue to do all we can to restore gas supplies as quickly and safely as possible.

“Once supplies have been restored we’ll investigate the cause of the incident.”

The gas supply started faltering on Sunday evening, thanks to a water leak that has now been fixed.
