HOPES that a chance sighting of Spurs superstar Gareth Bale in Cuffley would mean he would stay at White Hart Lane appear to have been dashed.

Tottenham Hotspur fan Chris D’Lima, who lives in the village, said his mum had spotted the prodigiously-talented Welshman house-hunting there in July.

He believed it meant Bale, 23, would remain with the Lillywhites.

Musician and actor Mr D’lima said: “I’m 100 per cent he is staying this season.

“I feel if we qualify for CL (Champions League) next season he’ll be happy to stay.”

But, with Spanish giants Real Madrid appearing increasing confidant of capturing the star in a world record £86m deal, that optimism has faded.

This week he told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “I’m gutted.

“Something must’ve happened a few weeks ago to turn his head.

“Got to be certain he’s off now.”

Other footballers to have lived in Cuffley include Jermain Defoe, David Bentley and Jamie O’Hara.

And Manchester United forward Robin van Persie lived in nearby Goffs Oak, when he previously played for Arsenal.
