GOVERNMENT statistics released this week suggest that the phenomenon known as ‘garden grabbing’ in Welwyn Hatfield is dramatically on the rise.

Figures from the Department of Communities and Local Government show that between 2006 and 2009, 44 per cent of new homes in the borough were built on previously residential land, including gardens.

This compares to just FIVE per cent of homes for the period from 2002 to 2005.

However, Welwyn Hatfield Council has rubbished the figures, saying that the actual garden grabbing figure for 2006 to 2009 was just 3.5 per cent.
