PENALTIES were needed to separate two talented junior teams at an annual football tournament.

A total of 21 year six teams from primary schools across Welwyn Hatfield gathered at Sir Frederic Osborn School in WGC, each hoping to secure the coveted winners' medals.

Following a number of round-robin matches, the final was contested between St John's Digswell and Springmead.

And it went all the way to penalties, St John's eventually triumphing after a tense shootout.

The bronze medals were collected by Welwyn St Mary's, who defeated Peartree in the competition's third-place play-off.

Jo Moxham, school sport co-ordinator at Sir Freds, branded the event a success and said all the students who took part had a good time.

"It was a good turnout with more schools than last year," she added.

The tournament was run by sixth-formers at Sir Freds and Mrs Moxham said it had been "very well organised".

As for the weather, she added: "It was perfect for the spectators.
