A CARNIVAL atmosphere took over Potters Bar as the glorious sunny weather shone down on the town's biggest party event of the year.

Hundreds of basked in Sunday's humid weather as the town carnival took over the streets.

Peter Weaver, of the organising committee, said: "There were more people there than last year, so it was a fantastic success.

"We took £800 more on the gates and it was brilliant to have more people through the doors.

Although everything was planned down to the finest detail, there was one thing on the day which took them totally by surprise.

"We really didn't expect the weather to be as good as it was," he said.

"We were planning for a reduced fete and at one point during the week we thought the field would be unusable, but everything turned out great."

"The highlight of the day was the Hertstoppers cheerleaders who put on a really great display."

Many charity stalls were up and running and Hertsmere Borough Council also donated a mobile BMX park for the youngsters.

Crowds were also treated to the procession led by carnival princess Kerri Brennock and her two maids of honour, Demi Burnham and Amy Kay.

Peter added: "The princess had 16 members of her family come over from Ireland which must have been great for her.

"The day really brings together the community which is what it is all about, and there was plenty of happy faces.
