FIRE crews are this morning still on the scene of a derelict pub left gutted by a massive blaze.

The Chieftain pub on Cole Green Lane in WGC was destroyed by fire that swept through the building yesterday evening (Friday).

Surrounding homes in Upperfield Road and Cole Green Lane were evacuated while firefighters battled with the high winds to contain the fire - with flames reaching about 60ft.

The wind hampered the fight to put the flames and residents were told to shut all windows.

One teenage boy told the WHT at the scene: "I live right by the pub and saw it start.

"First of all it was just smoke and it seemed like nothing, then it just got bigger and bigger.

"There were no flames until later on."

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 5pm.

The operation involved fire crews from WGC, Hatfield, Welwyn, Potters Bar, Stevenage, Hertford, Hitchin, St Albans and Wheathampstead.

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown, with fire officers currently carrying out investigations.

The area remains cordoned off.

The Chieftain has been boarded up since November after being closed down by brewery McMullen's.
