Clare James’ daughter Amelia, aged two, was at “death’s door” according to doctors after suddenly showing symptoms of the life-threatening disease in May.

But the community has since been rallying around to help with the family’s mounting expenses, and friends held their latest fundraiser at Woodhall Community Centre on Wednesday.

Visitors enjoyed a bouncy castle, tea, coffee and squash, as well as craft tables, cakes and a tombola – raising £464 in the process.

Joanne Gregson, one of the organisers, said: “The children really seemed to enjoy themselves, there was a lovely atmosphere, lots of laughter.

“People were really generous, we had some fantastic donations for the tombola and delicious cakes.”
