Potters Bar’s Sainsbury’s has come under fire after it slashed the free parking time at its car park.

The Darkes Lane store has reduced free parking from two hours to 90 minutes, after cutting it from three hours just last year.

Numerous shoppers vented their anger on social media, claiming the “crafty” move will hurt local businesses.

Little Heath resident Gillian Edwards said: “To be honest I don’t spend much time in Potters Bar shops and it may put people off from spending money in the local shops even further if you think you may get a fine for being a few minutes late.

“It doesn’t make sense with the Argos opening in Sainsbury’s either.”

A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “I can confirm we have introduced a 90-minute limit at our Potters Bar car park. This is to ensure customers can find a space when they shop with us and there are posters on display which explain this.”
