Now I know it is impossible to reach the legendary heights of superhero dogs such as Beethoven, Lassie, and Scrappy Doo.

But this is mainly because some of these iconic canines are either cartoons, can talk or at very least nonchalantly save people's lives when called upon.

So if you have pondered this, you will be delighted to hear that a new course in Welwyn, allowing dogs to fulfil their natural desires and talents, has been launched.

The well-established Gundog Club will now run beginners training courses that will teach owners to coax their pets to heel, respond to the stop whistle and respond to hand signals.

A spokeswoman said that the intimate courses that start next month are "extremely beneficial".

She said: "We still have a number of places left for the eight-week courses.

"Each session lasts for about an hour and has about six people in each group.

"We have a success rate of about 85 per cent.

"The courses are always very positive and dogs come away with skills that owners can use in everyday life.

"The classes are not just aimed at people who want to work and challenge their dogs.

"It's about them being able to use these skills in one year's time and beyond.

"Our trainer in Welwyn is exceptional and everyone is always very happy by the training.

"Sessions are run from a trainer's home in the village."
