IMPROVEMENTS will be made to the footbridge over the railway in WGC town centre from Hyde Way to the Howard Centre.

The move follows a campaign by county councillor Malcolm Cowan.

He said: "I know from my postbag how disliked the current state of the bridge is, particularly at night.

"I am pleased to say that following letters from the chief executive of Herts County council, at my request, Network Rail has promised improvements.

"I shall be pressing to ensure the work is carried out as quickly as possible, so the bridge can become an asset to the town once more."

An independent report said: "The condition of the bridge is poor in terms of lighting and maintenance.

"This adds to personal security fears and the narrowing of the bridge makes for an uncomfortable prospect.
