A massive new flytip has appeared at a Welwyn Garden City site.
A Welwyn Garden City resident spotted the flytip yesterday (June 27) at lunchtime in the concrete expanse behind Aldi, on the site of the old gasometers on Tewin Road.
The land belongs to the National Grid.
The resident described it as “massive”.
He continued: “It’s on an industrial scale. I was quite shocked to see it.”
As the incident is on private land, responsibility for the clean-up would fall to the National Grid rather than the borough council.
A spokesperson for the National Grid said that after demolishing the old gasometers, the company had put digital locks and CCTV at the site, which the trespassers had destroyed.
She said that they have been in touch with the Environment Agency and that the cost of clearing the flytip will be “considerable”.
She added: “We are in the process of getting contractors onsite and will put in new security.”
