A fire service spokesman said the police called one Welwyn Garden City fire crew at 8.42am to Holwell Lane (B1455) to help clear the water.

He added that the flood is affecting electrical equipment nearby, but it is currently unclear how it originated.

A police spokeswoman also said officers were unsure how it happened, although there were reports of water flowing off a nearby field.

More to follow.
