Here is the first glimpse of new plans to transform the eastern section of Hatfield's Town Centre.

The proposals could see number 1 Town Centre (the old Pizza Hut site) and numbers 3-9 redeveloped into 70 ‘high quality’ new homes and up to four retail units.

The flats would be a mix of one bedroom (one bathroom) and two bedrooms (some with one bathroom and some with two), with a current estimated market value starting from £325,000.

The proposals, which are for the eastern entrance to Hatfield town centre, will also be the subject of a series of public exhibitions.

The displays will feature design illustrations and a 3D model of the proposed redevelopment, which is part of the council’s wider investment programme to create a better environment for shoppers, businesses and residents in the town.

It follows a series of recent developments, including shop and flat makeovers in White Lion Square, the refurbishment of White Lion House and the addition of four national retailers with more expected to follow, including some national names.

Councillor John Dean, leader of Welwyn Hatfield Council, said: “This marks one of the most significant steps forward for Hatfield town centre in recent years.

“Our plans will deliver much needed housing, create new jobs and improve the environment and mix of shops for residents and visitors. It’s been a key part of our longer term plans and we’re confident our proposals will help attract more businesses and shoppers through to this part of town.”

Feedback will be gathered from the exhibitions, before a planning application is submitted next month.

If consent is granted, a developer will be procured to deliver the scheme.

This process takes several months, and once a suitable development partner is found, work will begin on site. The current expectation is for work to start in late 2017.

Plans will be on display at 3c/d Town Centre, Hatfield on October 18 and 19, 10am to 4pm, and also on Saturday, October 22, 10am to 3pm.
