Thousands gathered to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Hatfield House with a huge firework display on Saturday night.

The crowds watched on as the Jacobean mansion was draped in light and emblazoned with the years 1611 and 2011.

Explosions of colour filled the sky accompanied by a live orchestra playing Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks.

The display, thought to be the biggest in the country this year, was met by cheers from the crowds.

The event replaced the November 5 display usually held for the mayor of Welwyn Hatfield’s charities, but a donation was still made to his chosen causes.
