The fire service was called to a kitchen blaze in Hatfield.
Two Hatfield crews were called at 6.45pm on Sunday to a terraced house in Deerswood Avenue.
A fire service spokesman said one elderly man was led to safety and the fire was extinguished with hose reels within half-an-hour.
It was listed as accidental.
